- Japanese Sumitomo and Korean KT have announced the acquisition of two Uzbekistan-based telecom operators, East Telecom and Super iMAX. Sumitomo will own a 34% stake in East Telecom and 40% stake in Super iMax, while KT will control a stake of 51% and 60% in the two Uzbek companies, respectively. In the wake of the acquisition, Sumitomo and KT are expected to launch WiMAX services in the central Asian country. Combined revenue contributed by the two Uzbek companies is expected to reach US$61 million by 2012, according to Sumitomo's estimate.

- China-based Huawei recently revealed a joint WiMAX project with US-based NextWave Broadband, a subsidiary of NextWave Wireless. The project is to be conducted in NextWave's WiMAX lab in Nevada. Earlier in October, Huawei's 802.16e (mobile WiMAX) system equipment and NextWave's first-generation WiMAX chipset passed interoperability testing in San Diego, California.

- Starent Networks, a mobile infrastructure provider in Boston, announced on October 31 an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Taiwan's MOEA (Ministry of Economic Affairs) for the promotion and development of the WiMAX industry in the country. As part of the US$300 million M-Taiwan initiative to advance the broadband wireless and WiMAX progress in Taiwan, the MOEA has established similar agreements with Sprint, Nextel, Nokia Siemens Networks, Alcatel-Lucent, and Motorola.
